The Behavior of Direct Reduced Iron in the Electric Arc Furnace Hotspot

Hydrogen-based direct reduction is a promising technology for CO2 lean steelmaking. The electric arc furnace the most relevant aggregate processing reduced iron (DRI). As DRI usually added into arc, behavior in this area of great interest. A laboratory-scale hydrogen plasma smelting (HPSR) reactor was used to analyze that under inert conditions. Four cases were compared: carbon-free and carbon-containing from DR-grade pellets as well fines fluidized bed melted batch-wise. slag layer’s influence investigated using BF-grade continuous addition slag-forming oxides. While materials show porous structure with gangue entrapments, carburized forms dense regulus oxides collected on top. test demonstrates mixing effect arc’s electromagnetic forces. cross-section shows steel melt framed by layer. These experiments match past work preferable, material feed hotspot critical EAF operation.
